Future Proposal

As
far as influential genres for me, space opera has got to be at the top of the
list, so of course it is my inspiration for this project. I have chosen to go
for a more positive take on the future, something if not quite utopian then
certainly optimistic. A big part of the space opera genre is the idea of
exploring, naturally, space. Galactic-scale conflict is common but not
something I’m going to explore here. My main focus is inspired particularly by
Star Trek (both series and films) and Mass Effect, mostly for the design. I
have one concept that is more of a spectator, at something of a space port or
Starfleet Academy equivalent. However, it is the onboard ship ideas that call
to me a bit more. I like to think that if something like Starfleet or the Systems
Alliance existed, I would be a lot more likely to see them in my future. The
idea of exploring and seeing new places far away is highly intriguing to me.
Alien cultures are a potentially big part of that too, though again it is not
something I really plan to show except for maybe an alien planet outside the
window of the ship. But overall, I want to focus more on a positive future that
we could expect to see if changed our priorities, maybe spending less money on
conflict and military spending and moving towards sustainability and peace that
allows us to focus on things like exploring the enormous galaxy (and past that,
universe) we live in that we know relatively little about. I added another quick sketch also of an explorer on an alien planet, their ship above, which could also serve to further these ideas. In that way, perhaps
it is more utopian than I might have first thought. I just cannot shake the
idea of the future I would want to live in, even if there are more likely
things to happen. Still, we have seen throughout history what can happen when
people really choose to focus and put resources to something and the progress
that can be made in a surprisingly short time. Even private companies like
SpaceX are doing a huge amount for the potential future of space exploration.
It
all reminds me of a pretty interesting quote I saw recently. It was something
along the lines of this: I may have been born too young to explore the stars,
but I got to see the chariots being built. Part of me cannot help but hope that
there will be incredible things that happen in my lifetime related to space
exploration, and this project is an envisioning of things that go even better
than I could hope.
