Tom Richardson Report

Links two men with pigeon The Author The King is Dead Enduring Freedom (presentation removed as it only contained images from his new project that he asked not be shared online) Still from 'Two Men with Pigeon' Presentation Summary: Richardson went to Emily Carr University in Vancouver where he received a BFA in Film, Video, and Integrated Media. He now lives and works in Vancouver. In general, he uses different mediums for his works, depending on what he thinks would fit best, but this focuses on his work using video games. He thought of games as primarily political material and sort of ran with that, though he has said that not all of his work is political and sometimes is just experimental or narrative. One of the reasons he uses games is because he doesn't like telling people (actors) what to do. With games, he can set everything up and let it go. With games as political material, he also became interested in their underlying poli...

Paik and Vostell Art

Image
Paik's Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii (1995) Vo stell's  Oscillograph on Beethoven   (1959-1963) I found Paik's Electronic Superhighway piece interesting because I thought it was an interesting way to display this work. I like the neon and the brightness it gives to the piece. I also like the careful arrangement of the TVs to fit in the specific outlines of the states, even using really small ones to fit. I liked Vostell's Oscillograph mostly because of nostalgia and memories. It reminded me of the patterns I remember Windows Media Player displaying when listening to music on out old PC at home. I really enjoy that the visualization of sound has such a long history too.

Leonardo Sang by Samantha Spreitzer from Art 346 Digital Media UNR Artist's website: http://cargocollective.com/leosang/vrp shot from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood from his VRP project Presentation Summary: Leonardo Sang is an artist from Brazil, based in Sao Paulo. He works as a graphic designer, photographer and video game photographer, the last of which is my focus. He takes screenshots in games and uses only the most basic editing (changing colors, adding grain, black and white). His pictures are shot and framed the same way as in real life. They're not necessarily designed to be realistic but more just a different way of doing photography; sometimes they're just 'curious shots'. His 'Virtual Reality Photography' (VRP) consists of photos taken in video games, mainly ones he enjoys playing or ones that he likes the aesthetics of. This project was inspired by Robert Overweg's work (also photos taken in virtual space, th...

4 Arguments Questions

1. At one point, the following quote comes up: "It was as if the whole nation had gathered at a gigantic three-ring circus. Those who watched the bicycle act believed their experience was different from that of those who watched the gorillas or the flame eater, but everyone was at the circus." There is the implication that because everyone was at the circus, their experiences were inherently the same, despite the fact that they were not necessarily experiencing the same thing at all. What is the difference in these views that could lead to such different conclusions? 2. This quote also appears: "Worse, as we all watched from our separate living rooms, it was as if we sat in isolation booths, unable to exchange any responses about what we were all going through together. Everybody was engaged in the same act at the same time, but we were doing it alone." While this is perhaps true of the moment and historically, has the emergence of instant communication (via text,...
